Foundation Paper Piecing – Heart Blocks

I do think that January can be a difficult month. Here in the UK it is cold and grey with short days. With this in mind perhaps a little gift of a hanging heart or a heart coaster or mug rug would help to brighten up someone’s day. These are quick makes and there is nothing nicer than a little hand made gift to let someone know that you are thinking about them.

I have added two Foundation Paper Piecing (FPP) templates to the free pattern section here on the website. Foundation piecing is an extremely accurate form of patchwork and involves stitching the fabric directly to the paper. The paper is then removed on completion. There are many excellent tutorials online sharing this method so do take a look. The templates could be used in a number of ways:

  1. Stitch the FPP heart, add a backing and stuff lightly with soft toy filling. Some herbs or essentials oils could be added to the stuffing. Add a ribbon for hanging.
  2. Stitch the FPP heart, add fusible interfacing and a backing and you have a delightful mug rug or coaster.
  3. Stitch the FPP heart, trim the edge with pinking shears and glue to the front of a card.
  4. Stitch the FPP heart, iron some fusible webbing to the backing and add to a fabric background to create a block for a cushion, quilt or clothing.
